Family History ~ First Generation~ George Sherrod

Introduction

This story is the beginning of one line of our family tree. It is Sherrod line which will merge with the Richards line and on down to our immediate family.We start with George Sherrod. I have documented history of his day to understand the motivation for a young man to leave his homeland which was England in the early 1600's. It was an interesting journey for me.I hope you will enjoy the story that unfolded for me.

George Sherrod was born in the Isle of Wight, England

He was born about 1600 (before 1610).

He was aboard one of the many waves of English who braved the 3 months of sailing to Jamestown which was only a Coloney at the time.

He married Elizabeth Dew, born in England 1603 and at the age of 32, she boarded another ship bound for Jamestown.

Elizabeth Dew and George Sherrod were married in Virginia and had only one son.

SECOND GENERATION

John Sherrod I was born about 1630 in Isle of Wight, Virginia. He died about 1705 in Isle of Wight, Virginia at age 73.

In 1630, when John was born the Isle of Wight was gaining in population arriving from England. His father was among the first plantation owners in the area arriving about ten years before John was born. At the time, the area was know by it's Indian name and which was changed to "Isle of Wight Plantation" and later to the Isle of Wight.

The area was in Indian territory, however, they had a friendly relationship. The English expanded into the area as other arrived to receive the land grants The Indians retreated.


The map to the right shows were the Isle of Wight is located in relationship to the newly settled Jamestown.

Descendants, June Richards Daab and Olivia Richards Schrock visited August 2008 to take this photo and look at the land records. We were happy to find records dating back to 1650 are there all well preserved. A return trip is planned to add what we find to this generation.

John Sherrod l married (unknown first name) Parnell They had the following children:

Robert SHERROD III ~ born about 1659.

Thomas SHERROD I ~born about 1663. Died about 1731. Age 68.

Elizabeth SHERROD I ~ born about 1665.

Alexander SHERROD ~born about 1671. Died April 10, 1731 in Tyrell County, N. C. Age 60.

John SHERROD II ~born about 1673 in Northhampton County, North Carolina. Died about 1703 in Isle of Wight, Virginia Age 30.

THIRD GENERATION

John Aaron SHERROD II, b. 1673, in Northhampton County, North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Dew who was born about 1675.

From the ages of the children John married at about age 25.

They had the following children:

Eleanor SHERROD ~married Richard Thomas

FOURTH GENERATION

John SHERROD III was born about 1700. He married Hannah Dawson. Hannah was born about 1700.

They had the following children:

Charity SHERROD (This is the aunt to the Charity Sherrod who was married to William Richards.)

FIFTH GENERATION

Thomas SHERROD II was born about 1730 in Bertie County, N. C. Died in 1818 in Franklin County, N. C.

Thomas was a Major at the Provincial Congress in 1776. He also was Sheriff of the County.

He served in the American Revolution, where he was Major and promoted to Lt. Colonel and again to the rank of Colonel.

The D. A. R. accepted Colonel Thomas Sherrod's service in the American Revolution when Elizabeth Louise Horn, applied for membership on March 13, 1947. (National # 367584)

WHAT WAS THE PROVINCIAL CONGRESS?

It was the first such gathering anywhere in the Thirteen Colonies held in defiance of British orders.[ This lead up to our gaining Independence from England~

The Revolutionary War.

The war was the culmination of the political American Revolution, whereby the colonists overthrew British rule. In 1775, Revolutionaries seized control of each of the thirteen colonial governments, set up the Second Continental Congress, and formed a Continental Army. The following year, they formally declared their independence as a new nation, the United States of America.

Thomas Sherrod's Will was written on 11 July, 1818 and was probated on 29 November 1818.

Thomas was married twice.

First wife was Elizabeth Newby. Thomas married Elizabeth Newby in 1752. Thomas would have been only 22 years old.

They had the following childern:

Thomas Sherrod's Second wife was Jane Rouseau. They were married about 1756. Jane was 21 years old. Thomas only 26.

THE INTERESTING POINT HERE is that Thomas married Jane the year after his last baby was born to his first wife. Jane, his second wife didn't have a child with Thomas for eight years.

I have requested contact of others who are researching Jane as well.

THERE IS A STORY HERE. What is it? Of course, with his first wife dying probably in childbirth this would have left him in dire need of someone to care for his small children?

We look at history for a possible answer.

During that time, it was possible to pay the way for someone to come over from England...someone who otherwise could never afford to pay the passage. They would then work for that person for a set number of years to repay their debt.

The number of years was set at seven years and the person was called an indentured servant.

Was it possible he had a young woman brought from England to live with them and care for the children? I f so, perhaps social standards require him to marry this young woman before she could live under his roof.

THIS STORY leaves much to our imagination. For whatever reason, they did

not have a child for 8 years after their marriage.

Jane was born about 1735 and died about 1805 in Franklin County, N. C.

There are eight years between marriage date and first recorded child which we truly can't explain, however, I believe we have guessed the truth.

We descended from Thomas and second wife Jane

Charity Sherrod II b. about 1763 in Northhampton County, N. C. Died about 1850 in Chamber's County Alabama.

From a Family Group Sheet of the Thomas Sherrod family. This in conjunction with the 1850 census of Chambers County, Alabama indicates that Charity was probably born in 1763 as stated above.
This with the recorded date of marriages tell us that Charity is the first born child of Thomas Sherrod II and Jane Rouseau. (Or first born child to live and be recorded.)
